Quiz the one hundred-and-eighty-second: You’ve got mail (Part one)

Does anyone remember mailboxes? Living on a farm, I had one most of my life. It even had my name on it and a little flag that went up when the mail got dropped off. But rural mail delivery started cutting back years ago, and today we might even ask if anyone remembers e-mail. It seems as though nobody uses that very much anymore. Oh well. Let’s return to the days when such things as mailboxes existed, at least in the movies.

I still use email, so it’s not dead yet!
As for actual mailboxes, those are still around too, even in rich neighborhoods. I know this because last year my coworker cut a corner too hard while driving the work van and took out the clients mailbox. It was quite the to-do.
I know that Chas. Chan is obviously a Charlie Chan movie, but no idea which. Which leads me to the question, why Chas? Why is Chas an abbreviation for Charles? I’ve never understood that.

But overall, this was a stumper!

Did you know that the technical word for a short pet name like “Chas” for Charles is a hypocorism? I don’t know where it came from originally. Sort of like Dick for Richard.

The problem with mailboxes in the country is when kids would go around on weekends smashing them with baseball bats just for kicks. That used to get me angry.

I did not know that term. I hope I can remember it after today, because it seems a handy one to know.

I’ve heard about kids like that. Those are the kind I don’t mind seeing eaten or something in horror movies…..

A local guy even started a business making and selling mailboxes that were vandalism-proof. They were quite something. Thick plates of steel welded together.

I remember last year I had to show my neighbour how to write one. She’d never done it before.

But then, I’d be lost trying to buy something with a phone.

Cop Land is right. 14 and 22 are misses.

I’m proud of the fact that my work reviewing the Critters and Leprechaun franchises paid off.
