    A question for you.
I was talking with Bormgans about Dune and got onto the subject of the ’84 Lynch version. I want to eventually get the bluray version and he was wondering how old movies can be upscaled to hd like that. I pretty much told him “magic” but am wondering now. How DOES that work?

I’m not an expert, but a point that a lot of people don’t know is that film is higher resolution than digital, so movies shot on film (old movies) are actually higher resolution than HD. When doing a proper conversion they go back to original prints to convert them, which actually means downscaling them from film. They’re not taking a DVD copy and upgrading it to BluRay. Also for a really old film that is damaged they can restore it and improve it that way too. Anyway, I believe that’s a short answer but Eddie or someone might be able to help you out more.

Yes, Dog Day was off (though the movie it’s from was released around the same time). 45 and 46 were the other misses. Missing 46 brought a tear to my eye, especially after hitting on Cult of the Cobra and Midnight Meat Train . . .

Nothing wrong with any of that. I would have thought these were really hard to search for though. Then I thought maybe Phil knows every movie ever made . . .

Jeez that’s impressive! How did you get Head Count?? What’s with both you and Fraggle getting Midnight Meat Train? And Close Encounters was a good catch too, from that pic.

Jeff Bridges’ hair was a bigger tip off than Jessica Lange?

Only one very very near miss. Looks like there are a few pics here that are still stumping people, but overall I’m gobsmacked you guys got so many of them. I mean, a lot of these were not easy, and I don’t see how you could even Google them.

Our cinematic knowledge is overflowing! You can’t contain the beast!

I can hardly remember the film apart from Bridges. I didn’t even notice her there in that pic. But he’s got unforgettable hair!

May I inquire into what the near miss was? There’s some very tough ones here, but when you’ve got 50 photos, there’s always a chance to build up some momentum…

Looks like you got 30 by my count. Still a few out there but I think all the low-hanging fruit has been gathered up. Though given how obscure and difficult some of the ones that have been identified are, I’m a little surprised that a few of the remaining ones haven’t been picked.

      3. Over-The-Shoulder

Hmm… I’ll have to come back and have a look tomorrow with fresh eyes. I know the post’s main picture is Apocalypse Now! Point for that? And I’ll throw Major Dundee into the mix for 7 – might as well take a risk!

I don’t usually count the header pic as part of the quiz, because sometimes I’ve give them away. But that’s Dennis for sure.

No Major Dundee here though. But good guess!
