A question for you.
I was talking with Bormgans about Dune and got onto the subject of the ’84 Lynch version. I want to eventually get the bluray version and he was wondering how old movies can be upscaled to hd like that. I pretty much told him “magic” but am wondering now. How DOES that work?
I’m not an expert, but a point that a lot of people don’t know is that film is higher resolution than digital, so movies shot on film (old movies) are actually higher resolution than HD. When doing a proper conversion they go back to original prints to convert them, which actually means downscaling them from film. They’re not taking a DVD copy and upgrading it to BluRay. Also for a really old film that is damaged they can restore it and improve it that way too. Anyway, I believe that’s a short answer but Eddie or someone might be able to help you out more.
Thanks. I had no idea films were shot in ultra-mega-total-highasakite-definition. I will ask him.
I know Dix has got some of these but not sure which he got wrong so I’m putting mine all on.
1)Booogie Nights

50 was a lot!!
also why are Dix’s in list form and mine a paagraph, I wrote it out as a list 😦
I see yours as a list. I’m not sure why these things happen. I think it depends on your browser.
I see yours as a list too Fraggle. Using chrome on a windows laptop.
The two Dix got wrong were 6 and 50, which you got right. You missed on three. Congrats on the FraggleQuiz!
When I say “you missed on three” I mean there were three mistakes. Number three is Clueless, which you got right.
Aw shame about the 3 presume Dog Day was wrong, not sure about the others.
Yes, Dog Day was off (though the movie it’s from was released around the same time). 45 and 46 were the other misses. Missing 46 brought a tear to my eye, especially after hitting on Cult of the Cobra and Midnight Meat Train . . .
Hmm. Will have to have another think.
45) Charlie Chan in Panama
46) Blow up (of course duh!)
and 30) The Conversation 🙂
How are you getting all these? Is Phil helping you??
Absolutely not. A few I know and some I search for which might be counted as cheating but I have to go down a lot of rabbit holes for them so quite a fun thing to do.
Nothing wrong with any of that. I would have thought these were really hard to search for though. Then I thought maybe Phil knows every movie ever made . . .
Haha maybe every war movie ever made, but that’s abut it.
Can’t beat the Fragster when it comes to camera action!
I know Fraggle’s basically already won this, but I’m going to throw my hat in the ring here. Promise I haven’t looked at anybody else’s answers!
1) Boogie Nights
3) Clueless
5) The Amazing Spiderman
6) Bridges of Madison County
10) Head Count
12) Hopscotch
13) Close Encounters of the Third Kind
14) Diamonds Are Forever
16) Midnight Meat Train
18) Looks like Jeff Bridges – I’ll say King Kong
19) Omen
20) Walter Mitty
24) City of God
25) Spiderman 2
26) Clockwork Orange
27) Anthony Perkins, me thinks… Pretty Poison?
28) Candyman
29) Memento!
30) The Conversation!
31) Oh, is that your freaky doll man? Welcome to Marwen?
34) One Hour Photo
35) Her Majesty’s Secret Service
36) La Dolca Vita
37) Killing Fields
40) Stepford Wives
41) Topaz
44) Eyes of Laura Mars
46) Blow Up
48) Chinatown! Great pic
49) Salvador
50) Rear Window
Boom!
Jeez that’s impressive! How did you get Head Count?? What’s with both you and Fraggle getting Midnight Meat Train? And Close Encounters was a good catch too, from that pic.
Jeff Bridges’ hair was a bigger tip off than Jessica Lange?
Only one very very near miss. Looks like there are a few pics here that are still stumping people, but overall I’m gobsmacked you guys got so many of them. I mean, a lot of these were not easy, and I don’t see how you could even Google them.
Our cinematic knowledge is overflowing! You can’t contain the beast!
I can hardly remember the film apart from Bridges. I didn’t even notice her there in that pic. But he’s got unforgettable hair!
May I inquire into what the near miss was? There’s some very tough ones here, but when you’ve got 50 photos, there’s always a chance to build up some momentum…
Yeah, Bridges did have beautiful hair. Guess he still does.
You got Spidey in 25, but that’s not number 2.
And always will! A great actor to add, too.
Mmm… This really isn’t my area of speciality. Well, by trial and error, I’ll go for Spidey 3…
That’s right. But since you had a hint it doesn’t really count . . .
What was my score in total?
Looks like you got 30 by my count. Still a few out there but I think all the low-hanging fruit has been gathered up. Though given how obscure and difficult some of the ones that have been identified are, I’m a little surprised that a few of the remaining ones haven’t been picked.
Hmm… I’ll have to come back and have a look tomorrow with fresh eyes. I know the post’s main picture is Apocalypse Now! Point for that? And I’ll throw Major Dundee into the mix for 7 – might as well take a risk!
I don’t usually count the header pic as part of the quiz, because sometimes I’ve give them away. But that’s Dennis for sure.
No Major Dundee here though. But good guess!
